Trumpy Heads Back to Sea Sporting Attractive Makeover |

|
There are many names in the yachting community whose mention strikes a nostalgic note. Trumpy is easily one of the notables. NOA Marine, responsible for restoring 10 percent of all the Trumpy's ever built, recently completed a rebuild and restoration of the 84-foot Trumpy, Wishing Star.
This cockpit motor yacht, one of two 84 footers built in Annapolis by John Trumpy and Sons, was originally launched in 1963, John Drillot of Atlanta purchased the yacht in 1995 and delivered her to the Trumpy specialists at NOA in the spring of 1996. The two-year project included replacing 60-percent of the bottom framing, all bottom planking, a portion of the keel and both chine logs. Eighty percent of the original topside planking was restored and the hull sides refaired and refinished. The hull remains double-planked mahogany. Topside, a new teak superstructure replaced the original and an aluminum flying bridge and radar mast were added. |
Daniel J. Avoures & Associates provided the naval architecture and the interior design. Avoures maintained the balance between a modern yet classic interior by retaining "Trumpy styling" for the paneling and cabinetry. Terese Interior Design completed the interior. From the crew quarters in the fo'c's'le, to the owner's stateroom in the stern, the interior was entirely gutted. Now, a light-colored suede headliner runs throughout the yacht tastefully contrasting with the dark paneling. The original manual window crank mechanisms in the salon were rebuilt. The galley was completely replaced and fitted with modern appliances, teak cabinetry and easy maintenance surfaces. The pilothouse received the traditional teak treatment and was reconfigured to accommodate modern equipment. The flat, expensive foredeck is broken up by teak gear boxes, athwartships seating just forward of the coach roof, and a sliding foredeck hatch. The twin 12V71 Detroit Diesels were rebuilt and a 30 kW Detroit Diesel generator was added. Her modern electrical panels are the visible part of a complete rewiring job and all fuel tanks and piping were renewed. Westmar hydraulic stabilizers, HRO Systems watermaker, Cruiseair air conditioning and a Nautical Structures davit combine to meet today's expectations for comfortable cruising. for more information contact NOA Marine, Inc. in St. Petersburg, Florida.
